DOT off Farmers Backs

News — walterj 11:48 am

I recently got a call from our Congressional Representative Peter Welch that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has backed off from their mandate that farmers, and anyone with a tractor or other farm vehicle, be required to get a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), drug tests and such even to drive on their own land. This is good news indeed. You spoke, you wrote and the government heard the hew and cry. They actually backed away. It was a clear violation of states rights and citizens rights. Thank you for sending in your comments to prevent this egregious transgression of our rights.

Spot on and DOT off!

Recalls are not about Disease

News — walterj 1:00 am

From the Food Business News article “Report notes rising recall rates” notes:

Stericycle’s report found undeclared allergens or other allergen concerns were the primary cause of recalls

In otherwords, “Oops, it was misslabeled.”

The rest of the recalls are caused by problems in processing that introduce disease organisms into the foods such as the E. Coli in vegetables, sprouts, ground turkey, etc. In other words, animal traceability is not the issue. The problems are not coming from the farm. The disease traceability issues are at the processing plants.

If Big Ag want’s to have “traceability” so they can pretend they’re local then they need to implement their own voluntary version at their own cost with their own suppliers.

If the exporters want traceability so they can crack foreign markets then they need to implement their own voluntary version at their own costs.

Tax payers, consumers and small farmers should not be burdened with these traceability programs or their costs.

The USDA needs to back off and leave us alone.

Bisin Makes NAIS/AIN Unnecessary

News — walterj 11:53 am

PROBLEM SOLVED!

SCIENCE has solved the problem and now we no longer need traceability.

Stick that in your pipe Mr. Vilsak!

Scientists discover natural agent that kills bacteria in food

“US scientists have discovered a naturally-occurring agent that destroys the bacteria that cause meat, fish, eggs and dairy products to rot.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota reported the discovery of bisin - a naturally-occurring compound produced by some types of bacteria.

The agent reduces the growth of bacteria including E. coli, salmonella and listeria and could lead to sandwiches that stay fresh for more than a year, the UK Sunday Times reported. [Okay, that is just weird. -WJ]

The discovery also means that opened wine and products such as fresh salad dressing could last much longer - in some cases for as long as several years.

It could also lead to a reduction in the amount of food wasted and thrown away each year.”

“It [bisin] seems to be much better than anything which has gone before,” O’Sullivan said. “It doesn’t compromise nutrient quality. We are not adding a chemical - we are adding a natural ingredient.” Because bisin is chemically related to nisin, which is used to keep processed cheese sterile and edible for decades, it does not need to be pharmaceutically tested and could be on the market within a year.

So it looks like we can repeal the Food Safety Modernization Act since Science has eliminated the “Food Borne Illness” problem.

[Who should get the credit? Science or Mother Nature? Now the real question is will the USDA even listen. They say everything they do is Science based… -WJ]
