Congressional Hearing on NAIS

Action Item — walterj 5:16 pm

****ACTION ALERT****

*WHAT: *Congressiona*l *Hearing on NAIS
*WHEN: *Wednesday, March 11
*WHERE: *Washington, DC

The U.S. House Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry will hold a hearing on NAIS on March 11. Bills to put NAIS into law, HR875 and companion Senate S814, are being pushed through Congress, as well as an Appropriations Bill with funding for NAIS. This hearing is critical to blocking mandatory NAIS.

*ACTION: Please call and fax all members of the subcommittee (below). *

*1. When you call, ask to speak to the legislative aide for agriculture. Form a positive relationship with the aide. Become his or her source of knowledge for NAIS. Be RESPECTFUL and POLITE. Remember, who would the aide rather speak with, someone who is courteous or someone angry and resentful?* *2. **Please send this to everyone you know, ESPECIALLY to people in the states with members on the subcommittee. Members need to hear from their constituents–the people who vote them into office.*

*If you are in one of these states, please arrange a meeting with the district representative of the Congressman. That makes a big difference. We need to be real people to the legislators, so that when they think “farm” or “food” they think of us, not Monsanto, Cargill, Tyson, etc…*

  1. Walter,

What about the Omnibus Appropriation Act, 2009 ~ Now (Engrossed)HR 1105 that passed the House in less than 24 hours yesterday, and is now in the Senate?

This bill includes funds of which $14,500,000 shall be for a National Animal Identification program, of which $3,500,000 is for information technology infrastructure and services, and $9,395,000 is for field implementation, and $1,605,000 is for program administration.

It also includes benchmarks and timelines for cattle, poultry, sheep and swine registration and PIN requirements.

I just called both my Senator’s offices and they said the same thing ~ it has been scheduled on the Senate Calendar, but didn’t say when.

I asked them to please pass on my message to my Senators to NOT support HR 1105.

HR 1105 is imminent for passage. We need lots of phone calls and emails to the Senate asking them to take out the NAIS funding and implementation!

  2. Who should we contact in the Senate besides our own Senators?

    Comment Valerie — February 27, 2009 @ 5:40 pm

  3. I called people in MO and they did not even know about this. Why did we not see this? I have made my phone calls and signed on the lists, but what can we do when our congressmen do not listen.

    What do we do now?

  4. If you are in Kansas - Contacting has been made easier here:

    VoteKansas.org

A fax blast has also been set up. You will have to provide your name and address. It will be sent to all the Appropriations Committee Members - documented proof that WE SAY NO.

    Contact: jlmartin@votekansas.org

If you want to do this yourself, although “onesies” may not be as effective, go
    Here.

There are 30 links - it will take you a bit. But give them no Plausible Deniability.

Also - don’t forget to contact:
    Vilisak : AgSec@usda.gov

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There is also a VERY important Subcommittee Meeting taking place March 11, 2009.

NICFA has a great page up
with the information and easy contact methods. There are 13 States Represented - as long as you
can Click - you can help.

NICFA has laid the ground work through pre-communication with these Legislators. They know you call/email is coming.

    Do it now.

    Respectfully,

  5. what can we do when our congressmen do not listen?

I guarantee that if this were a gay issue, those people would be on their elected offal like…uh, they would be loud, vocal and demanding their more equal rights…
funny thing, the gays already have all the rights of any US citizen, they just want more because of their orientation, but that is another subject…the results are they have the govt running scared and doing what they want and they do not back off until they get what they want.
We need to have the same resolve because the bigger issue is the loss of our rights extends toward those that do not even own animals.

  6. Look at farmtoconsumer.org for their info. on the March 11th hearing by a Congressional Committee on Animal ID. Only “invited” people will be allowed to speak. We can comment via e-mail to the Hearing Clerk…put March 11th hearing on Animal ID at the subject line… Here is the e-mail… Jamie.Mitchell@mail.house.gov

    Comment The Phantom — March 8, 2009 @ 5:27 pm

  7. For the March 11th committee hearing, “live audio and video will be available at the start of the hearing and can be accessed at: agriculture.house.gov/hearings/audio.html (put http:// in front) It starts at 10 a.m.

    Comment The Phantom — March 10, 2009 @ 9:17 am

  8. Go to: agriculture.house.gov/hearings/schedule.html (put http:// in front) and they have up: Panel I, Dr. Clifford Panel II, a rep. from the Pork producers, NCBA, Nat’l Milk and Amer. Vet Asnn (all pro nais and many recepients of CA $$$) and….R_CALF (Dr. Thornsberry) and Panel III, someone from Canada and one from Australia…wouldn’t it be nice if the one from Australia would say what the former Pres. of the Australian Beef Assn. said:”Nais couldn’t track a bleeding elephant through the snow” (from r-calfusa, animal ID, “fight nais down to the last cowboy”. Hope everyone will keep up with this. I was told Bill Bullard would be there, from R-calf….

    Comment The Phantom — March 10, 2009 @ 11:11 am

  9. Up now at R-calfusa.com are Dr. Thornsberry’s oral (6 pages) and written (22 pages) testimony for the committee. They are excellent. That 22 page testimony covers it all….Thank you R-calf!

    Comment The Phantom — March 11, 2009 @ 1:00 pm

  10. Forgot to say, Hit on Animal ID when you pull up r-calfusa.com for the two testimonies….

    Comment The Phantom — March 11, 2009 @ 1:04 pm

  11. R-calf has the video up now; 14 minutes, from the former pres. of the Australian Beef assn….on animal ID…It is on the front page and also at animal ID. I am having trouble getting it to run…but, check it out. Also, at their newsreleases, Dr. Thornsberry has a follow-up on yesterdays hearing..saying its is business as usual with USDA…I recommend you read it; dated March 12th…

    Comment The Phantom — March 12, 2009 @ 8:24 pm

  12. R-calf wants us to fax to the Honorable David Scott, Chairman of the Ag. subcommittee our comments on Nais and the slanted hearing. The fax number is: 202-225-4544 We only have by March 20th.They have a sample letter at the front of their website… r-calfusa.com and look at Darol Dickinsons comments at naissucks.com that he sent…22 points he gets straight!! (one person who calls a spade a spade!)

    Comment The Phantom — March 17, 2009 @ 9:35 am

  13. Darol Dickenson did 27 points, not 22.(my previous post). Also, at the comments that USDA is getting, up to 260 pages now..look at p.258 for Dr. Eldridges’…state vet of Washington State..kinda interesting…”we recommend that USDA rescind and delay enactment…..”

    Comment The Phantom — March 17, 2009 @ 9:50 am

  14. Sorry, I haven’t the time to check everyone’s post to be sure this info isn’t already here. I just received an ACTION ALERT from Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund about SEVERAL bills in Congress impacting local food production.
