Diebold, maker of voting machines comes clean.

“…According to spokesman Chris Riggall, a “critical programming error that can cause votes to be dropped while being electronically transferred from memory cards to a central tallying point” has been part of the software for ten years. The flaw is on both optical scan and touchscreen machines, and while Mr. Riggall asserts that the logic error probably didn’t ruin any elections… the outfit’s president has confessed to being “distressed” about the ordeal.”

Please note Diebold’s primary business before making voting machines was making ATMS. Interesting they had no problems with errors on that more complicated task.

There is also speculation that the US government has back doors into windows operating systems.

But then Jeff Dean would be sure that there was no cause for anyone to take a close look at ATMs
“Jeff Dean, Senior Vice-President and Senior Programmer at Global Election Systems (GES), the company purchased by Diebold in 2002 which became Diebold Election Systems, ,b.was convicted of 23 counts of felony theft for planting back doors in software he created for ATMs,/b. using, according to court documents, a “high degree of sophistication” to evade detection over a period of two years[7]. In addition to Dean, GES employed a number of other convicted felons in senior positions, including a fraudulent securities trader and a drug trafficker.”
