Lawyer in TB Scare Is Released From Hospital

The Atlanta lawyer who caused an international health scare after traveling through Europe with a multidrug-resistant strain of tuberculosis was released from National Jewish Medical and Research Center here this morning after completing treatment. Hospital officials said the lawyer, Andrew Speaker, who arrived at the medical center on May 31, was no longer contagious and there was no further detectible evidence of infection.

I am, of course, not debating the relative merits of lawyers and bulls. What I do question is why if a disease is curable is the government destroying private property against the will of the owners? The fact that one happened in the US and one in the UK is irrelevant - both governments are guilty of this sort of bad behavior. The “Common Good” is an overused excuse.

Hat tip to Susan.

Bush Threatens Farm Subsidies

News — walterj 4:45 am

What!?? Has Bush gone sane?!? Am I finally seeing eye-to-eye on something with the guy I repeatedly voted against???

President Bush opened Wednesday’s flurry when his agriculture secretary announced that the president would veto the House bill because it fails to cap subsidy payments to millionaires.

The House bill does drop the income cap from $2.5 million to $1 million, but so few farmers earn this much - after taxes - that the “reform” would affect only about 3,100 farmers nationwide, according to the Agriculture Department.

A few such farmers exist in the Delta and the Valley, but most live in the Midwest. Midwestern lawmakers dominate the Agriculture Committee.

The Bush administration’s Farm Bill proposal would have dropped the income limit to $200,000 a year, after taxes. That idea was unanimously rejected in the Agriculture Committee last month.

Unfortunately, no. Bush does not go far enough. We need to eliminate all subsidies. Not just for farmers earning more than $200,000. In fact, we need to eliminate all subsidies in all sectors of our economy. One of the big reasons that globalism is hurting so many people, why jobs and products are being shipped around the world is that oil is so heavily subsidized. If transportation were no longer subsidized then the market would normalize and locally grown and produced foods and products would once again dominate.

I vote to end all subsidies.

House Farm Bill Vote

News — walterj 10:07 pm

For those who keep track here’s the roll call for the House vote (231 Aye, 191 Nay, 10 non-voting) on the Farm Bill. Interestingly the voting was highly partisan with the Democrats for the Farm Bill and the Republicans against it. I never can figure those people out…
