The tests take as long as two weeks for results, but those results must be current within 30 days of the animal's blood draw and his entering the state. That leaves only a two week window if a person is relying on a trucking service to haul your purchase from out-of-state. I can see this making it increasingly difficult for responsible breeders to maintain and improve their stock. I don't know how the AI system works, but our nearest vet with that kind of expertise is 85 miles from here. I recieved an email from a local rep that had expressed interest and outrage at NAIS earlier in the year and had agreed to help in any way she could. Well, on Tue. 17 she sent me an email saying that she had talked to the house ag/rural affairs people and they told her that SB 865 would not make it to the floor for a vote (effectivly killing it, because in Pa if a bill doesn't get to the floor it is scrapped at the end of the session),well the session ends Monday 23,so that would seem to be that.I was not sure what to make of all this as I have heard a rumor or two that SB 865 was in trouble but I wanted to confirm it before I said anything, I called Rep Scott Hutchinson who has been a big help and asked for his confirmation. Well this morming after several other calls his sec. Kim spoke to me and said that Scott talked to Art Hershey and that he wanted me to know it was for real, Art told him that too many folks had expressed objections and that he wanted me to know it will not get out of committie this session.This buys us some time to fight this NAIS,true SB865 will probably be reintroduced in some form in the future but maybe then we will have more imput and have more say into any future legislation and be able to slap it down before it gets shoved down our throats, I was told that we couldn't stop this thing, that it was a done deal,to which I responded that those bigshots just might be suprised well, suprise! Pa has been issueing premise id to folks for over a year,they were so confident that this bill would pass,I belive it is now time to call them on their behavior ,all those id numbers do not have a basis in law or statute, nothing! Seems to me that makes them invalid, not that any unconstitutional law would do anything to make them more legitimate,but they really don't have anything to stand on. They are looking at premise ID with a very narrow viewpoint and when we told them it was part and parcel of NAIS, they couldn't refute that. I don't think they realize the global implications though (with the exception of trade). And speaking of semantics, I made a point of stating at the meeting that the USDA has redefined "voluntary, grass fed and organic". They didn't refute that either. I agree. I was there, and in spite of PDA’s presentation where they claim premise ID in PA is separate from the NAIS, they didn’t fool anyone there. Even if PA’s intentions are benevolent, USDA’s aren’t, and I said as much to them. What was kind of funny though, was at the beginning of the meeting when introductions were made, they were quick to point out that they were from PDA and not USDA. They are quite aware of how angry most farmers are with the USDA.
I hope the USDA moles on this list are aware that American farmers have lost all trust and confidence in them. USDA should be gutted as a useless organization because they only answer to big business’s needs.

By and large Maine's database has many more problems than just being at risk for hacking as it so often doesn't work. Incidentally, it's against state law to own a peacock in Maine. Would I trust Maine's database security to maintain my privacy under NAIS? Never. Not in this or any other lifetime...and I'd trust the US federal government less. As for commercial corporate databases being given all our information garnered under NAIS, all we know for sure is our information would be sliced and diced and sold and resold every possible way profitable.
