PA Expand Premise ID to Plants

News — walterj 4:04 am

The Pennsylvania Farms Premise Identification Project had upped the an by expanding Premises ID from just livestock to also include premises which raise plants. They want to know what you’re doing no matter the excuse…

Is PAFarms Just For Animals?
No, PAFarms is not just for animal farms. Similar to PDA’s need to notify animal producers in the event of a disease outbreak in their area, PDA also needs the capability to notify non-animal farm owners of plant pathogens that may impact their area. Whether it is plum pox or some other emerging disease of commercial plants or crops, knowing what to look for, and who to notify becomes critical information. Additionally, in the event of a chemical spill or wind-borne pollutant event that can impact the safety of crops grown within an impacted area, identifying and notifying farm owners becomes a critical activity for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. From time to time waterways may experience a chemical spill incident that can impact farms many miles downstream. If PDA has the capability to rapidly identify and notify these landowners of the event, then the damage can be minimized and the agent can be contained before it enters the human or animal food supply via crops.

What will they be chipping next? Your tomatoes? This is getting to be a very lucrative business for the vendors who supply software and other supplies for the newly mandated identification systems. Wouldn’t you like to have the government tell everyone they had to get their lamb chops from an approved source, you?!?

R-CALF’s Nelson Disses Mandatory

News — walterj 3:09 pm

Eric Nelson is R-CALF USA Region VII Director on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) and Premises ID:

A purely voluntary system can provide the information needed today as it has in the past.

It’s my opinion one of the reasons premise ID and the government ID programs have been so poorly received is that the average producer has little faith that the government can run a program as large as this. I have heard producers say more than once that “the government can’t track illegal aliens, so how in heck will they be able to track hundreds of millions of animals?”

But most producers have confidence in their state (and state veterinarian) to be in charge of a voluntary program. And then let private enterprise do its thing. If there ends up being a premium for cattle with certain identity status, let the market take care of that. But to say to producers that you have to use a certain tag, when the lower-cost tag they already are using allows for traceback, goes in the face of what our country is all about.

I am concerned by those who want there to be just one “North American beef industry.” Those promoting that idea are usually not independent producers, but rather importers and processors profiting hugely from their ability to bring lower priced beef into this country and sell it seamlessly as USA beef.

We need more people to stand up and be heard saying that mandatory is bad, bad, bad. The last thing we need is our government forcing more rules, regulations, costs and violations of our rights. A truly voluntary, market driven, industry maintained system of animal identification is fine but we don’t need the government sticking its nose in everything and micro-managing our lives.

Be heard! Take just an hour today to protect your rights. Write your local newspapers, politicians, state departments of agriculture and the USDA to let them know you won’t accept a mandatory NAIS or a mandatory Premises ID. Protect our traditional rights to farm!

CDC Plans NPIS

News, Satire — walterj 3:07 pm

In recent email dispatch it was announced that the Center for Disease Control has discovered 13 cases of human plague in four states leading to the proposal for a new National People Identification System (NPIS) to use implantable, satellite GPS based, active RFID for tracking the movements and interactions of all humans to control the spread of disease.

In an unusually frank interview the chairman Frank-Lee Im Yokin announced that “In the event of a serious disease outbreak in schools or the workplace they would be using a depopulation program to limit the spread of disease to protect the economy.” When asked about the social costs of killing school children Mr. Yokin scoffed and said that “Disease, microbes and viruses know no boundaries. They can strike anywhere. We must be prepared to kill, kill, kill! Blood and gore, maimed little bodies!”

This reporter was unable to get in any further questions before the men in white coats regagged Mr. Yokin and dragged him back to his office. The actual dispatch from the CDC is below:

MMWR Dispatch Vol. 55 / August 25, 2006

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

Human Plague - Four States, 2006

Plague is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis.

In 2006, a total of 13 human plague cases have been reported among residents of four states: New Mexico (seven cases), Colorado (three cases), California (two cases), and Texas (one case).

This is the largest number of cases reported in a single year in the United States since 1994.

Dates of illness onset ranged from February 16 to August 14; two (15%) cases were fatal. The median age of patients was 43 years (range: 13-79 years); eight (62%) patients were female. Five (38%) patients had primary septicemic plague, and the remaining eight (62%) had bubonic plague. Two (15%) patients developed secondary plague pneumonia, leading to administration of antibiotic prophylaxis to their health-care providers.

This report summarizes six of the 13 cases, highlighting the severity and diverse clinical presentations of plague and underscoring the need for prompt diagnosis and treatment when plague is suspected.

For the full MMWR Report, please see this link.

[Please note, the above dispatch is no joke. NPIS is, I hope, since I just made it up… Of course, it sounds scarily like NAIS and REAL ID. One must wonder, “If they are excusing NAIS on the grounds of some theoretical, far fetched threat like terrorists, BSE or Avian Influenza then what excuse will it take to tag us? After all, it is for our own good.” -WJ]

[UPDATE: All joking asside, someone gave me this link. See page 42, #7:

The next step is to unfold the roadmap that would portray the deployment efforts required in the configuration of a new national people identification system.

Scary… -WJ]
