Governmental Disease Vectors

Commentary — walterj 6:26 am

The USDA claims that its National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is an attempt to stop the vectors of disease. But there are very major vector of diseases that NAIS will have no effect on. The number one being that the government itself.

Government inspectors drive from farm to farm. Their tires carry manure between the farms. They don’t change their boots or follow proper bio-security procedures to prevent the spread of disease. Just the other day I was talking with two inspectors who stated exactly this. So, while the government is burdening us with NAIS they are going about the business of spreading disease. NAIS will do nothing to stop the spread of disease. If we want less disease, maybe the solution is less government.

Just a Tattoo

Commentary — walterj 7:47 pm

Some people have questioned “What’s the big deal? It’s just a tattoo or ear tag.”

The problem is the government keeps saying that they want trace back for contaminated food. Food contamination happens after the farm in virtually all cases. Farms are not the source of food contamination, especially with meat. It is the slaughter houses and processing plants that are the source of most food contamination. After that is improper storage by the retailers and consumers.

The trace-back to the farm gives the big processors and the government a scape goat without solving the real problems. They can conveniently blame some farmer for tainted meat, make spin on it and pretend they did something in order to keep the public happy and calm. This hurts the farmer, who is innocent, fails to correct the problem, hurts the truth and hurts the consumers in the end. The issue is not corrected at the real source of the problem so more people end up sick and dying. But hey, profits stay up!

I don’t have a problem with tattoos - its a fine way to track animals. I looked into it for our pigs but decided against it because I am able to identify every one of our pigs visually and keep a herd book based on that. A little ink is not the problem.

My problem is with the government’s intent, their lying, their slight of hand, their spinning and warping of the truth, their overly complex, wasteful system of NAIS, their mandating it upon us, their gross violations of our privacy and the abrogation of the Constitution. Those things are big problems. It is a very slippery slope from that mark on our beasts to fascism. I don’t want to go there.

RFID In Your Pants

News — walterj 7:47 am

Clothing manufactures are starting to put RFID tags in clothing. This may seem innocuous at first glance but realize that by verifying your identity at check out or some other time and correlating that with the RFID tags in your sneakers, pants, credit card, purse and other wearables, retailers, the government and criminals could track your movements and invade your privacy. All tags should be disabled at checkout when we purchase goods. Otherwise this is just one more way to tag people.
